1. You’ll learn something new

As well as inevitably learning something of the history running through these ancient cobbled streets, and filling up on freshly made pastel de nata, Portugal offers an abundance of activities and skills for the whole family to learn. Portugal’s Atlantic coast boasts some of the best surfing conditions in Europe, so don a wetsuit, grab a board and visit Praia de Ancora for a surfing lesson you’ll never forget.

2. Broaden your palate

Portugal is renowned for gastronomic excellency thanks to its abundance of fishing villages. On the coast you’ll never be far from fresh seafood, with grilled fish and pasteis de bacalhau (fried shredded cod combined with potatoes, onions and parsley) being popular staple dishes. For those with a sweet tooth, a pasteis de nata (Portuguese custard tart) never goes amiss. While in Porto you can visit a pasteis de nata atelier bakery to sample these freshly baked egg custard tarts. Delish!

3. Swap screens for outdoors

Whether you’re on the coast or exploring inland, there’s no shortage of stunning landscapes to discover in Portugal. Put away the iPad and pull on your walking shoes as we escape the crowds to visit Peneda Geres National Park. Home to stunning views over Sistelo as well as the unique Cachena cow, there are plenty of hikes to suit a range of abilities and ages. Finish off your trek with a spot of wild swimming in a scenic natural rock pool, perfect for cooling off.

4. Soak up the sunny weather

Portugal is blessed with beautiful weather, with spring, early summer and autumn being particularly good times to visit. While the islands may experience sudden rainfall throughout the year, you’ll have a good chance of enjoying sunshine during your trip. Meanwhile, in the north of Portugal, the hot temperatures and bright sunshine make a spot of wild swimming even more refreshing.

5. Make new friends (especially on a small group trip!)

On a small group family trip to Portugal, you'll be joined by likeminded travelling families. The typical age on our active family Portugal trip is 13, with a minimum age of 7. With so many activities to take part in, children are certain to make newfound friends as they explore an adventure park, while adults can mingle over a glass of vintage port.
