Frequently asked questions about our small group tours

First time on a small group holiday? We've answered the top questions about travelling on an Explore tour:

How big are the group sizes on Explore tours?
Our groups range in size from between 6 to 20 people, depending on the type of trip, the transport and accommodation used and activities included. We rarely have groups that are smaller than five or six people or larger than 16, and the average is 11 people plus an Explore tour leader.

Is an Explore group tour suitable for solo travellers?
Yes, all our small group tours are ideal for solo travellers. In fact, around 60% of our customers travel solo so you'll likely have other single travellers in your group. By being in a small group you'll have like-minded travel companions to share the experience with. Also, your local leader will be on hand to share their expert knowledge of the destination and take the hassle out of travelling.

What types of group tours does Explore offer?
We offer several types of group tour: Discovery tours (all-round 'classic' tours that include cultural highlights, history, food, wildlife, etc), Walking tours, Cycling holidays, Polar tours and Family holidays.

What's the accommodation like on a group tour?
We offer different levels of accommodation on our tours: Simple, Comfortable and Premium. The most common type is Comfortable, which is the equivalent of European 3-star hotels and usually means a private en-suite room. We use small, locally-run accommodation where possible, in the best locations for you to see the must-see highlights. We generally try to include some unusual accommodation like homestays with locals or camping within national parks. Find out more about accommodation

Will I be escorted by a guide?
Yes, you'll be led by a local guide with expert knowledge of their destination. They'll be able to show you the must-see highlights as well as hidden gems that are not known or available to the typical tourist. They'll be with you to ensure you have the best experience possible on your tour, as well as to keep you safe and arrange any details like transfers and group meals. Plus, they're fully-trained to handle any unexpected situations that may arise.

Can I take my family on a group travel tour?
Yes, our family adventure tours are group holidays for families, typically with around 11-18 people in a group plus a local leader. Adults get the company of other adults and the kids get to make new friends. We run family trips all over the world, to well-known destinations as well as more unusual ones. With lots of activities included and opportunities to meet locals and stay in quirky accommodation, you're sure to return with plenty of stories and memories to last a lifetime.

How sustainable are Explore's group holidays?
Being sustainable and responsible is incredibly important to us at Explore. We're working hard to ensure we travel in a way that positively impacts the people and places we visit. We've committed to offsetting the carbon emissions for all trips taken from 1 January 2020, including flights, accommodation and transport. Find out more about sustainable travel.

What ages are the group holidays suitable for?
Our group tours are suitable for any age - generally the minimum age is 16 however this can depend on the trip. Our trips attract people of all ages, so it doesn't matter if you're in your 30s or your 60s. Check the pace or grade (for walking tours or cycling holidays tours) of a trip to decide if it's what you're looking for.

The minimum age of children on our family tours varies by trip. Check the 'family information' section of the trip page to find out the average and minimum ages.
