Top walking destinations in France

Provence

Head to the southeastern corner of France to walk amongst fields veiled in a sea of purple lavender, shady olive groves and fragrant pine forests. Hike up to the medieval hilltop village of Gordes and explore the emerald green waters of Fontaine-de-Vaucluse set in the foothills of the Vaucluse Mountains. Far-reaching views of rustic farmland stretch over the Luberon plateau towards a horizon of jagged mountains and reams of sunflowers sway in the breeze as you wander through the peaceful landscape.

Mont Blanc

For a more challenging hiking tour in France, take on the lofty trails of Tour du Mont Blanc. Regarded as one of the most spectacular treks in Europe, the trail covers 148 kilometres through France, Switzerland and Italy. Rocky paths meander through lush green valleys, and snow-dusted peaks rise up in the distance, soaring into the azure-blue skies. Glacier ice floes spill down the mountainside and glassy lagoons reflect a mirror-image of the panorama above them. It's fair to say that hiking through the highlands of France is certainly no mean feat, but it's an incredible accomplishment for any keen walker and an experience you'll never forget.

What to expect on a walking tour in France

Can I go walking in France as a solo traveller?

Absolutely! All of our walking holidays in France are suitable for solo travellers. In fact, many of the people who join our France hiking trips do so on their own. If you want to explore France on foot with the company of like-minded travellers and the expert guidance of a local tour leader, a group walking trip is ideal.

When is the best time to go on a walking holiday in France?

Our group treks to Mont Blanc, France, occur in June and September to take advantage of the warmer weather whilst also avoiding the peak summer season when the trails can get very busy. If you're heading to the southeastern region of Provence, trips in September/October and March/April are likely to feature dry days with pleasant temperatures in the mid-twenty degrees Celcius, with the added benefit of fewer crowds.

How challenging are walking holidays in France?

If you want to challenge yourself, our treks amongst snowy peaks of Mont Blanc involve steep ascents and descents of up to 1200m per day through towering valleys and over high passes.

Where will I stay on a France trekking holiday?

For treks in the Alps, we use a variety of different accommodation styles including simple guesthouses, family-run hotels and basic mountain refuges. On our Provence walking tours, you'll stay in comfortable hotels that offer a good level of service, and usually have en suite facilities and heating or air-conditioning. Please check the individual tour notes for details.
